Mark Zuckerberg, the found of Facebook surprisingly studied psychology in university. He had a personal interest in computer proggramming and took on some social networking projects for fun in his spare time. His interests lead him to creating "The Facebook" , a site that profiled both the students and staff based on there courses, interests, age, gender and relationship status'. This allowed friends to "add" and select who could veiw their profile. This took off over night and within a day the social networking site had 1200 members. Perphaps Zuckerburgs background in psychology allowed aided him in understanding the interests people would have in online socialising causing the site to be such a sucess. By 2005, a year after the creation of "The Facebook", the site had spread to neighbouring universities. In August of that year, the site was urchased for 200,000 dollars and the name changed to just facebook.com. With it's open availability to all colleges and high schools the site became worldwide.
The network expanded passed the educational needs and opened up to anyone with an email address. Though the site is free to sign up to, the money made on advertising on the site covers the companies cost and creates a profit. The site was announced to be the largest networking site with an educational focus. Companies, class and social groups are able to set up and direct pages with easy by themselves. The site offers was way of internet based socialising that does not encourage either suda names or any other means of false information.
However, Facebook.com did not become so popular without any trouble. Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook.com was taken to court by Divya Narendra, Cameron and Tyler Winklesvoss over copyright and stealing codes for facebook.com while Zuckerburg was working for them as a proggrammer in Harvard University. Thankfully for Mark Zuckerberg the case was dismissed on a technicality.
Overall facebook.com is sucessful for a varity o different reasons. It is a new and simple way of keeping connections and finding past friends you may have otherwise lost contact with. Zuckerburg's understand of how human connections are made, used and maintained benifited the site as it encourages it's users to privatise their pages so that they will share pictures, relationship, accomodation and education/work changes with all their connecting friends. It also allows people to connect with each other based on interests and similarities. Fan and support pages allow people to share and recieve information based on their shared interests.

The study on Facebook and how it effects are relationship proves to be interesting as we are now exposed to our friends personal updates reguardless of our day-to-day relationships with them. This could make a break up or ending of a friendship hard as we are likely to stalk or spy on their updates as they appear on the facebook news feed. Based on the above aricles there are many positive asspects on facebook. But these asspects such as the information box and photo uploads and shares can prove to be have a negative effect on inividuals as the harshness of competition to be more popular or social than other is increased. This can envoke jealousy and a feeling of inaptness in certain individuals.
